Call it a blessing in disguise - we took the wrong bus, ended up at Tanjong Katong, and came across Katsuya for dinner.
We had a lovely time chatting with chef-owner Kervin, and was very impressed by his passion to provide quality tonkatsu in Singapore.
We ordered the Hire and Hokkaido Rosu Tonkatsu sets, and were blown away by the tenderness and crust. Specific to the Hire Tonkatsu, the fiance says - "This is the best tonkatsu I had in Singapore".
Katsuya recently moved to Tanjong Katong 3 months ago - and its new location is minimalistic, clean, and has a peaceful atmosphere suitable for couples and families. I would highly recommend this place to everyone!
Used to be at the busier East Coast Road, they moved here along Tanjong Katong Road which is more tranquil and laid back. This place has a very inviting feel with that very open and chic vibes. I recommend going for the Hokkaido Rosu which is so juicy and tender, with that crispy and light batter.
Great quality pork. Been here many times. New location feels more specious as they are now having the open kitchen layout. You get to chef in actions now.
The food at this place is excellent! I ordered the freshly battered and fried Unagi katsu, and it was perfect. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Paired it with salt and mustard. Chef’s kiss. Will definitely be back again.
Best katsu that I have ever had so far! Had both Hire and Hokkaido rosu set. First bite was mind blowing - crispy but the meat was so juicy and not oily at all. Friendly and attentive staff. Overall great dining experience and for sure will visit this place again.
Awesome place overall - i love how the meat is tender, the breadcrumbs crispy, flavor just right and nothing too overwhelming. Serving size is proportionate and i love how simplistic yet delicious everything is! Not to mention, service is great - they’re very pleasant, friendly, attentive and accommodating! I’ll be back! ♥️
Wow wow wow. There's so many things I would like to comment about Katsuya. First of all, thank you chef Kervin and his wife for being so accommodating with my girlfriend in helping me celebrate my birthday. They went out of their way to help my girlfriend with the planning. I am grateful for their assistance to help my girlfriend with the surprise. I would like to thank my girlfriend for the surprise and also the team at Katsuya going the extra mile
The katsu here are amazing, the first time I tried was not at the current store and but over at tanjong katong. It was the best katsu I have ever had in Singapore thus far and now it's become the go-to katsu place. Then I got to meet Chef Kervin, and he made my experience at Katsuya a little different. Now, I look forward to not only dining indulged in good katsu but also to meeting with Chef Kervin. And it's a pleasure enjoying the food he put forth and conversing with him.
And with the new design of Katsuya, it's also a joy watching him work behind the scene pushing out great food and conversing with his diner. Dining at Katsuya has become an experience.
Now, more about the food. The katsu is exceptional, any cut you order, it's crispy, moist and tender. Simple seasalt over a piece, it's sufficient to taste the sweetness of the katsu. If you're there the first time, try the Hiro (it's lean meat, without the fat cap) which I feel is the best experience to Chef Kervin's work. Tasting the simplicity of the pork, but if you want more flavour, there's the mustard provided as well adding a kick with each bite, a simple, I think it's bbq sauce, it also provide a different taste to it.
Then when you're feeling more adventurous, try their Rosu, which is pork with the fat cap. And if you're feeling more excited to try their off menu, their salmon and lamb is out of this world. But require prior ordering.
I highly recommend coming here and experience dining with chef Kervin. If you're into knife there are a few pieces that you can admire while chef Kervin works his magic.
To Chef Kervin and his wife, thank you again for my birthday surprise that you help my girlfriend to plan. Very much appreciation for your food and your time to chat with me each time we are there. Look forward to next time there. Thank you once again! And Merry Christmas!
Just look at that - beautifully fried katsu. Pricey, but worth it for the quality.
The only thing I think can be improved is the rice. Would have preferred better quality rice.
